I installed the new version (0.19.1) and noticed that the CherryTree saved backups of all files I opened. How do I disable it.

I implemented the preferences dialog option to disable the automatic backup, but it will not be available immediately in a stable release.
If you already want the feature you can pick a development version from mercurial version control as described in the download section of the cherrytree homepage.
