first install these packages (xmame, the emulator)

sudo apt-get install xmame-common xmame-sdl xmame-tools

after that download and install gxmame (the gui/frontend for xmame):

32bit deb package: gxmame_0.35beta2-1_i386.deb
64bit deb package: gxmame_0.35beta2-1_amd64.deb
source: gxmame-0.35beta2.tar.gz (compile it according to the how to)

put the roms into a folder ”mameroms” that you create in your home, after that, to show gxmame the path, after opening gxmame:
option -> directories -> tab “xmame basic paths” -> insert the rom path, then add, then apply, then ok… close and relaunch gxmame and you will find the roms of your folder “mameroms” as available.
